The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has declared its intention to set up a new detention camp at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) for passengers meant for repatriation from the country.
This comes as the Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun, called on all the security agents and paramilitary personnel working at the airport to work together to ensure seamless facilitation of passengers at the airport.
Aisuebeogun, who dropped hints of the new detention camp for Lagos airport while playing host to the new Deputy Comptroller of Immigration for MMIA, Garba Abdullah, said people with immigration offences would be kept in the camp while investigations into their cases were on.
He said FAAN has also concluded plans to create an immigration desk at the presidential lounge of the airport. These, according to him, were to enhance the performance and productivity of immigration officers deployed to the airport.
He expressed concern over occasional delays in passenger facilitation, attributing the development to bottlenecks in the system, particularly on the part of some security agents at the airport.
The FAAN boss, who noted that most of the time, counters at the departure control were left unused due to shortage of immigration officers and other security agencies, called on the new immigration chief to look into the problem and other related ones militating against smoother facilitation of passengers.
Noting that there was a fusion between immigration and airport facilitation, Aisuebeogun explained that seamless facilitation was a key factor in FAAN’s operation, adding that passengers assess the agency’s performance by the pace of passenger facilitation, since smoother facilitation ensures better comfort for passengers.
He lauded the policy of the immigration service in removing errant officers from the airports as part of the agency’s effort at preserving the integrity of the country.
Earlier, the Immigration boss of MMA, Mr. Garba Abdullah expressed appreciation to the FAAN boss for the agency’s assistance that ameliorated some of the problems of the agency at the airport. He solicited for more support in the provision of additional office accommodation for his officers and the installation of public address system in their offices.
