Ebonyi Govt bans operation of motorcyclists on dual carriageways

The Ebonyi Government has banned the operation on commercial motorcyclists on dualised roads in the Abakaliki metropolis.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Ken Ohuo, told journalists in Abakaliki that this was one of the decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting.

He said the government had also barred commercial motorcyclists from operating on all roads in the capital city between the hours of 7p.m. and 6 a.m.

Ohuo said:“The Council noted with great concern the increasing incidents of shooting and maiming of innocent citizens of the state by robbers who operate on motorcycles and had to take the decision in the interest of the citizenry.”

“Beginning from Saturday, 15th of August, 2009, motorcyclists are barred in all dualised roads in Abakaliki metropolis.

“Every road within the capital city that is dualised motorcycle operators are longer allowed to ply on them.

“Also, from the same date, motorcyclists are barred from operating on all roads from 7p.m. to 6 a.m.daily.’’

Ohuo said commercial motorcyclists were also barred from entering all government institutions, including hospitals.

“This is one of the measures the State government is taking in the interim to check ugly activities of robbers who operate on motorcycles.

“All citizens of the state are enjoined to cooperate with security agencies to ensure that the intentions of the state government in taking these measures are attained,’’ he said.
