Benue Police nab 2 over threat to kidnap commissioner’s wife, daughter

Makurdi – Men of the Benue State Police Command have apprehended two men who had threatened to kidnap the wife and daughter of the state Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr. John Ngbede.

Parading the suspects before newsmen at the Government House, Makurdi, the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed said the suspects had through a phone text demanded a ransom of N1million from the Commissioner, failure upon which they threatened to kidnap his wife and little daughter.

Explaining further, the Commissioner of Police said the lead suspect who gave his name as Shagari Stanley, who is also the cousin and blood relation of the commissioner, had demanded the pay off which he ordered should be deposited into a friend’s bank account (name of bank withheld) at Anyangba in kogi State.

But unknowingly to the suspects, Mr. Ngbede had quickly alerted the Police who also sent words across to all formations in the country and the bank concerned with a view to apprehending the suspect operating the receiving account.

It was at the point of cashing from the account in Anyangba that the police in that state was alerted and one of the suspects, James Olowe, who had gone to retrieve part of the money from the bank was apprehended.

The lead suspect, Shagari Stanley, who confirmed his role in the saga and his relationship with the affected family, however, regretted that he did not intend to carry out his threat but was only out to extort the family.

His words: “I did not want to kidnap them. I only wanted to get money from my cousin in order to set up a business and also further my education,” he said.
