Benue : Crisis over alleged kidnap of Tarka council boss

By Peter Duru

MAKURDI – Crisis has broken out in Tarka Local Government Council of Benue State following the alleged kidnap of the newly sworn-in council chairman, Mr. Stephen Kpev, by unknown persons and the alleged plot by some individuals in the area to have him resign his position to pave way for the inauguration of the widow of late William Akume Dajo to assume the chairmanship position.

At the moment, sources are alleging that Kpev might have been abducted by the group that is bent on installing the widow of the late chairman, Mrs. Phoebe Akume Dajo as the chairman of Tarka council.

The action, which has drawn the ire of the youths and leading stakeholders in the area, has left the entire local government council at a boiling point as youths have moved into the streets of Tarka Local Government Area with the intent to make the area ungovernable.

Sources told Vanguard that the angry youths are threatening to burn down the houses of the few politicians in the area who, they alleged,   are behind the scheming to upturn constitutionality in the council.

One of the youths, who gave his name as Tersungwe Jime, said they would make the council ungovernable if the former council chairman, who constitutionally succeeded the late council boss, was not produced to enable him carry out his duties as the duly recognised council chairman.

He said, “Those who want to perpetrate illegality in our council area must desist or face our wrath.”
