Abuja – Defence Minister, Maj-General Godwin Abbe (rtd), said yesterday that the direct labour approach of the Nigerian Army in building houses for over 150 families at the Mambilla Barracks annex in Abuja, is a precursor to the capability of what the Nigeria Army engineers are capable of doing, noting “It has shown that the Army not only involves itself in fighting to develop the nation, it also builds.”
Speaking after carrying out an assessment tour of the ongoing General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua barracks located adjacent Mambilla barracks, the minister said: “We are proving the point that the Army is not only capable of fighting any battle effectively, in peacetime, we are capable of replicating the feet in the development of our nation in other areas.”
Disclosing that the direct labour approach may not go down well with contractors who obviously would look at making some gains on such projects, the minister said, ““As long as we know that whatever we are doing is right and whether is purposeful, there is no problem. Once the intention is good and focused and results are achieved, people can feel the way they likeâ€â€.
On how he intends to assist the army source for funds to complete the gigantic project, the minister said hitherto the release of funds before the Yar’’adua administration faced some difficulties that affected quick release of funds when budgets are passed but that has been taken care of.
