A-Ibom Assembly, NASS members endorse Akpabio for 2011

UYO—Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as well as lawmakers in the National Assembly from the state have jointly endorsed Governor Godswill Akpabio for a second term, basing such early adoption on his record of achievements in just two years in office.

In a resolution unanimously supported by all the members,  the lawmakers said Akpabio’s unprecedented achievements in the state were worthy of emulation by other state governors.

Announcing the House decision in Ibom Hall, when the Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili visited Uyo to launch the South-South leg of the Rebranding Nigeria Project, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Engr Ignatius Edet said: “Since the governor has performed very well, the State House of Assembly and by implication the people of Akwa Ibom State, have resolved that His Excellency will go back for a second term.”

Symbolically, the Speaker presented a key to Akpabio, to enable him pack into the newly completed Governor’s Lodge, an ultra-modern edifice built under 18 months.

With the development, Akpabio, who had been operating from his private residence since May 29, 2007, can now move into the official residence of government.

According to Edet: “This is the Master Key, sent from Heaven; delivered by the State House of Assembly to open the Governor’s Lodge of Akwa Ibom State for  the Governor.

Promptly, the Assembly’s resolution was overwhelmingly supported by Akwa Ibom Caucus in the National Assembly, led by Senator Effiong Bob. The 13-member body (3 Senators and 10 Representatives) were all present at the ceremony, a situation noted by the visiting minister as uncommon in other states.

“If Akwa Ibom was not okay, you wont see us from the National Assembly coming to stay with the Governor”, Senator Bob said; adding it has become a common feature for them since they are all happy with Akpabio’s performance in just two years.

“As a Caucus, we took a resolution that we must be here as always. Honorable Minister, you have seen that in all the states you have visited, it would appear that this is the only state that all the members of the National Assembly are complete here; together with all the members of the House  of Assembly working together with the governor. We are believing that it is through this cooperation, support and encouragement that we have development in our state.

“We in the National Assembly do not have any other thing to say than to support the position of our state house of assembly. The key has been given to the governor to stay up to and including 2015. That was by way of motion by the  House of Assembly. We in the National Assembly also second the motion. There’s no vacancy!”, said Senator Bob.

While agreeing with the general acceptance and appreciation of the people, Prof Akunyili said she was “deeply touched” and “thrilled” after witnessing some  of the projects done by the Akpabio’s administration.

“I have gone round to see some projects and honestly, I am thrilled. I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that this young man (Gov Akpabio) started rebranding Akwa Ibom right from May 2007,therefore, we are together”.

Noting that Akpabio was reaping love and goodwill from his people because he sowed good governance, Akunyili said “You are reaping from what you have done for your people. You are reaping from establishing a culture of clean environment; putting in place disciplined civil service system; free health services; free education; massive road construction; the airport is in place; the Tropicana; the new Governor’s Lodge; and most recently, the Outside Broadcast Van that I just commissioned…It’s simply amazing. I don’t what this place would be like in the next two years”, she said.

Congratulating the governor “on the good work you are doing for your people”, Akunyili said it was apparent that the  lawmakers’ endorsement of the governor was never planned, hence Akpabio shed some tears of joy.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Obong Uffot Ekaete who hails from Akwa Ibom State, said he was proud of Gov Akpabio’s achievements.

Acknowledging  that “Akwa Ibom State is okay”, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) said Akpabio unprecedented achievements “explains why it has transited from the land of promise to the land of fulfilment and is now aiming towards being a destination of choice. This can only be achieved through the efforts of our digital governor. ..I am proud to be part of this success story”.
