500 schools benefit from $21m World Bank loan

Kaduna – No fewer than 500 public schools are benefiting from a $21m (N6.26 billion) World Bank Specific Investment Loan (SIL) under the Kaduna State Education Sector Project (SESP).

This was contained in the state government’s two-year performance report in the education sector. The report showed that the benefitting schools were made up of 421 primary schools and 79 junior secondary schools in six local government areas.

The report, issued by the state Commissioner for Education, Malam Sulaiman Lawal, stated that the six councils included Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Kagarko, Sanga, Zaria and Soba.

The report said the loan was secured without any counterpart funding from the state government except for some limited recurrent expenditure.

It said that 190 classrooms were being constructed in 38 schools in the benefiting schools across the six council areas.The report said that 41 blocks of two modern toilets were being constructed for teachers and 46 blocks of six toilets for students in some selected schools under the programme.
