5 dead, 20 hospitalized after Amala & Ogbono soup meal

LAGOS — Five people were confirmed dead yesterday and twenty others critically lying in the hospital after a meal of the Popular Yoruba Amala and Ogbono soup in the house of a prominent Alhaji (names withheld).

The sad incident which took place in Owode area of Lamgbasa, Lagos sent cold shivers down the spines of many who had taken part in the meal in the meal at the break of the Ramandan fast yesterday morning.   According to sources, some of those who ate the meal started complaining of stomach ache moments after and they were rushed to a nearby hospital where five were confirmed dead.

Twenty others were later rushed in and are presently battling for their life.

The medical doctor of Akodo General Hospital , Dr. Imosimi Donald said two of the six victims among the twenty on danger list were in critical condition.  The cause of the tragic incident could not be immedaitely ascertained but when contacted,  the Baale of Adokekere, Chief Akeem Idowu who also confirmed the development, called on government to arrest the situation immediately by stopping the sale of the killer Amala.

While ruling out any foul play, the Baale explained that the man whose house the meal was served is a devout Muslim who  was always involve himself in giving free meals to faithful in a show of philanthropy for the past five years.

The woman who prepared the meal said she bought the Amala from a market in Mushin yesterday Most of the people that died were identified as commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as “Okada riders” who usually gathered at the philanthropist compound to have free meal. Two of the philanthropist children, including his wife and mother were said to be in the hospital receiving medical attention with there fate hanging in the balance.

It was gathered that Semovita, Eba, and rice were among the meals served at the man residence early yesterday’s morning.   Though, it was gathered that all those who ate the food were not affected but those who ate the “Amala” were affected.

Lagos state police public Relations officer, Mr. Frank Mba who also confirmed the incident said the police would investigate the matter with a view to determining the cause of death of the victims. Adding that the number of death were four males and one female.  He gave the names of the dead as Ismaila Wegba, Sherif, Jide Ijoye, Rasaq Adesina, and Bola Francis.

The police image maker further said that five persons were currently hospitalized at Akodo General hospital, ten at J-Rapha hospital Owode Lamgabasa while the remaining five were in Safe way hospital at Sango Tedo nera Aja.  The police he said had collected sample of the food left over for forensic analysis while a male suspect has been arrested.

Speaking further Mba saithe matter would be transferred to the SCID Panti for in-depth investigation.
