FATHER of Super Eagles’    striker, Peter Osaze  Odemwingie (Jnr.), Dr. Peter Odemwingie, Tuesday in  Benin, escaped assassins’ bullet in an assassination attempt  on his life in the Edo State capital, Benin.

His younger brother, Mr. Donald, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Benin yesterday, said that his elder brother had just left his house barely few meters away when he ran into an ambush laid by the suspected assassins.
He further explained that his elder brother quickly made a U- turn  and sped off, but was given a hot chase by the assailants who fired gun shots into his Kia vehicle. According to him, only God saved his brother, adding that a Carpenter who was with him in the vehicle sustained bullet injuries and he is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

The incident, he said occurred at Etete, in the Government Reservation Area (GRA),  Benin, just as he added that two expended bullets  were recovered at the scene of the attack. He disclosed that  the assailants came in an ox-blood car.
Mr. Donald, a former journalist with the Guardian newspaper, confirmed that his elder brother had made statement to the Police on the incident.

Vanguard reliably learnt that Dr. Odemwingie had had a problem with his bankers where he had gone to withdraw some money on Monday to execute some projects and had wanted the money paid to him in Euros  but the bank was said to be hesitant in paying him in Euros, and this led to a quarrel between him and the bank officials. It was gathered that Dr.  Odemwingie and the bank later reached an agreement that the  money would be paid in Dollars by Mid-day yesterday before the attack took place but it was not clear what the motives of the attackers were.

Contacted yesterday, Edo  State Police Command image maker, Mr. Peter Ogboi, declined comments on the matter, but a highly placed police source  confirmed the incident.
