One shot as leadership tussle rocks Abakaliki market

ABAKALIKI—A chairmanship contestant for Abakaliki Market Traders Association (AMTA), whose name could not be ascertained at press time, was yesterday reportedly shot, while the Abakpa main market was closed down and cordoned off by the police, following the leadership crisis that rocked the only market in Ebonyi state capital city.

Vanguard learnt that election for the executives of the market association is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, while campaign of calumny and horse trading have trailed the election that has also assumed ethnic coloration.

The contestant, shot by unknown gunmen is said to be contesting against the incumbent AMTA chairman, Mr Peter Oba, even though the said Mr Obi could not be reach yesterday,  to comment on the development, but the state police command said it cordoned off the entire market to forestall looting or arson.
