Public Awareness and Mobilisation Committee for the Nigeria 2009 Under-17 World Cup will hold its second meeting at the National Stadium Abuja today where critical programmes to sensitise Nigerians on the forthcoming football fiesta would be discussed.
The committee which has since inauguration swung into action will also hold a world press conference in Abuja, the following day to announce the last 100 days to the commencement of the games which will take place at eight centres—Lagos, Abuja, Ijebu-Ode, Calabar, Kano, Enugu, Warri and Kaduna.
Chairman of the committee, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, disclosed that today’s meeting would be critical as the committee will have to deliberate on a whole lot of programmes which include a trophy tour of all the states hosting the games as well as other prominent cities in Nigeria.
“We have since swung into action,†Dr. Ladipo said. “We have printed and distributed some thousands of T-shirts, stickers and several banners which we have been distributing both in Nigeria here and in Tunisia during the match against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia. We were also at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, during the Federation Cup final between Enyimba and Sharks to sensitise the public about the Under-17 World Cup.
“Mobilising Nigerians could be a difficult task but we have done it before and we know how to go about it. For the first time in Nigeria, the National Stadium in Abuja was filled to the brim in the last match between the Super Eagles and Kenya. That was the result of mobilizing the people in Abuja and environs for several days. It is tasking but we shall do a good job,†he said.
