By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—PRESIDENT General of Isoko Development Union (IDU),Elder Peter Ovie Erebi, has called on the Federal Government to build a gas turbine in Isoko land to boost electricity generation and supply in Isoko nation and its environs.Erebi spoke during a meeting of the IDU leadership with the Minister of State of the Niger Delta Ministry, Elder Godsday Peter Orubebe.

He said the federal government has neglected the Isoko nation, despite its oil wealth and other mineral resources over the years. While calling on the government to redress the age long neglect of Isoko nation, in particular and the Niger Delta in general, he said; “the right atmosphere exists in Isoko land to attract federal government’s attention and presence.

“It is discouraging to note that the reverse has been the case over the years. But thank God for the intervention of the present administration of His Excellency, Alhaji Musa Yar’’Adua, which has began to direct attention to the Niger Delta by settling up intervention agencies like the Niger Delta Ministry and seeking to create enabling atmosphere.“

The presence of adequate electricity supply is a fundamental factor to effective economic growth and empowerment of the people. Most Isoko communities are still in darkness without electricity and pipe borne water.

“The list is long, but most affected are Okpe-Isoko Clan, Umeh Clan, Erowha Clan, Onogboko Community, Iyede-Ameh Community, Ikpide, Kanaan-Irri Community etc.

“These are large settlements with numerous villages and thickly populated, yet denied of electricity. Other Isoko communities with semblance of electricity supply receive supply sporadically.

“The situation has heightened unemployment, joblessness, and the youths are exposed to all forms of vices. A timely provision and installation of Gas Turbine shall bring relief to Isoko land.“It is sad to note, that Isoko Riverine communities still remain inaccessible without motorable roads.”

To this end, Erebi called on the federal government to embark on construction /rehabilitations of roads in Isoko nation.
