Flood wreaks havoc in Imo

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Flood has sacked scores of families and destroyed properties worth millions of naira in Egbu autonomous community of Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.

Vanguard investigations revealed that the incident was occasioned by the torrential rainfall, which hit parts of the state for the greater part of last Sunday.

It was further gathered that the worse hit out of the five villages that make up Egbu autonomous community, was Umuanyalu, as the community fled their homes for safety.

One Mr. Lugard Igwe, a member of the community described the flood as “unprecedented”, adding that people’s homes were submerged in the flood.

“The flood is unprecedented. I cannot remember the last time this community had this type of experience. Homes were submerged. Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the incident”,  Igwe lamented.

Confirming that several homes and properties were submerged in the flood, especially in Umuanyalu, Mr. Igwe said that people endlessly scooped water from their homes as the drainage system in the community collapsed because of the heavy rain.
