ENUGU—GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has intervened in complaint by farmers in the state and rift on who controls the Federal Government-subsidized fertilizers allocated to the state. The rift had stalled equitable distribution of the fertilizers.
Barely three months to the end of this year’s farming season, several tones of fertilizer delivered to the state by the Federal Government have not been distributed due to an internal disagreement between the State Ministry of Agriculture and the Enugu State Fertilizer Procurement and Distribution Limited over who should handle the distribution.
Disturbed by the development, some concerned farmer and fertilizer dealers forwarded a petition to the Governor last weekend, requesting him to intervene to ensure that the fertilizers were made available to them without further delay.
They also accused officials in-charge of fertilizer procurement and distribution in the state of cutting corners by hoarding the product, a situation that has forced prices of the product up to the detriment of the farmers.
