KANO — Operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), attached to Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport have detained a 50-year-old woman found with 585 grammes of cocaine worth N6 million.
The suspect identified as Akormadu Florence Abiola was arrested by operatives on suspicion of having swallowed drugs suspected to be cocaine while attempting to board a KLM flight.
The Area Commander of the special Unit of NDLEA, Mr Sumaila Ethan told journalists in Kano that upon her arrest she was immediately kept on observation for four days, during which she excreted 42 wraps of cocaine, weighing 585 grammes.
Ethan disclosed that the latest arrest indicates that drug traffickers have devised new tricks to beat NDLEA officials by abandoning their luggage as unclaimed at the airport only to storm the airline office to claim the same consignment at a latter date.
The Area Commander of the Special Unit, explained that the latest technique employed by the drug couriers typified the seizure of 15 parcels of compressed Cannabis Sativa, weighing 15 kilogrammes at the same MAKIA.
“The drugs were packed in a bag and left unclaimed among others, and no sooner the bags were about to be taken to the Egypt Air office than NDLEA operatives insisted in searching them, during which a bag, which tag was believed to have been removed to conceal the identity of the trafficker was searched and the drug was discovered,†Ethan said.
He added that the recent arrest was second in three months since he assumed duty at the MAKIA, as he cautioned potential drug traffickers that the Kano Airport route is a no-go area for such illicit activities, saying “let me warn that Kano Airport is a no-go area. My officers have been placed on alert to foil any move drug barons may make to ferry their drugs through the airport, as all loo-pholes have been blocked.â€
