Why I declined invitation from Ambassador to Holland—Edo gov

BENIN—Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday advanced reasons he declined to accept an invitation from the Nigerian Ambassador to Holland for an investment fair, saying he needed more time to impact democratic dividends on the people.

The governor, who described as unfair the peddling of rumours by certain people in the state that he was not always in the state to address the deluge of problems facing the state, explained that he had travelled overseas only once since he took over the reins of leadership in the state which was the delegation of the Governors’ Forum.

The governor spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mr. John Mayaki, and disclosed that he had turned down nine overseas’ invitations since assumption of office.

According to him, “just last weekend, it was reported that the governor travelled overseas whereas he was in office treating urgent state matters.

“Since the governor assumed office, he had travelled abroad but once and has turned down about nine other invitations because he needed time to address the pressing issues in the state.

“If you take time to check the Benin Airport schedule, most of the trips the governor has made within the country are of paramount importance. Such trips either have to do with the economy of the state or its security. As usual, state governors attend series of meetings and he cannot be exempted.

“Besides, the governor sometime ago was appointed by Mr. President as a member of the Presidential Steering Committee on Economic Meltdown chaired by the Vice President. Therefore, he is not expected to sit in Benin City while issues on how to improve the economy of the state are being discussed”.

He stated that the governor has a wide network by virtue of his antecedent in the Labour congress and progressive movements which requires consultations, traveling, attending public functions across the state and beyond.
