The ancient commercial city of Kano on Thursday witnessed an historic event, as officials of the MTN reaffirmed the company’s commitment for polo, with the presentation of N20 million sponsorship cheque ahead of this year’s MTN Kano International Polo Tournament.
The glamorous polo fiesta billed to gallop off from July 27, 2009 is one of the only three polo grand slams in the country after Lagos and Kaduna international tournaments.
According to MTN CEO, Ahmad Farrukh, the company’s involvement with polo was its own way of contributing to the development of the noble game that has been part of Nigerian culture for over a century now. “MTN has since its coming to Nigeria been at the forefront of sports development with several sponsorship initiatives spanning polo, golf, soccer, amongst others. We plan to do more in this regard and take sports to the level where it would rival the best anywhere in the world,†he declared.
“Like the services we provide, polo is a unifying force that knows no boundaries. We are tapping into the passion that people feel for the game to bring to the front burners the need to develop our sporting sector, so that in our little ways we can contribute to making life better for Nigerians,†he added.
Kano Polo Chairman, Alhaji Bashir Dantata, who described MTN’s long-term partnership with Kano Polo Club, as worthy of emulation, pointed out that the landmark collaboration has already impacted positively in the development of polo and sports generally in Kano. He pointed out that Nigeria currently boast of some of the best handicap players in Africa.
