70-yr-old, 12 other detainees freed in Kwara

By Demola Akinyemi

Ilorin — A septuagenarian, Mallam Tanko  Suleiman, was among the lucky 13 detainees released, yesterday, by the  Kwara State Criminal Justice Committee led by the Acting Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Fola Gbadeyan.

The detainees were held at the federal prison at Oke-Kura in Ilorin for several months without trial  for offences that were described as minor before the reprieve came.

It would be recalled that the Chief Judge who was on his second visit to the prison had earlier in May released 12 persons detained without trial at the prison for similar minor offences.

Gbadeyan, who reviewed all cases brought before the Committee, assured that his administration would do everything humanly possible to de-congest prisons in the state.

The Chief Judge also commended the wife of Kwara State Governor, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, for paying the fines for three inmates. The three prisoners had been convicted with an option of fine which they could not pay.
