FORMER Information Minister, Professor Jerry Gana, yesterday declared that the impact of the ruling PDP government across all the tiers of government on the populace would significantly determine the fortunes of the party in the 2011 elections.
Professor Gana, who spoke in Abuja, in a parley with journalists to unveil the Abuja Festival of praise slated for Friday December 12, 2008, also re-iterated that, despite the apparent lull in his political engagement, he would make himself available to campaign for the victory of the PDP in the 2011 elections. Gana however insisted that, the extent of the performance of the PDP administration at all level of government would substantially impact on its electoral fortunes, saying, “ I hope the PDP will deliver, because my concern is that, we must affect the lives of the people in Nigeria with good governance. “The seven point agenda is well targeted, but we are pleading with government at all levels, to move effectively to deliver on infrastructure, to deliver in other areas, we are praying for government, we are urging them, we are supporting them, because the people of Nigeria deserves the kind of good government that would deliver results. They want their lives to be better,” he added. He called on the elected PDP administration at all tiers of government to brace up to meet the yearning of the electorate for, “ better roads, schools, hospitals, an economy that creates wealth, and generates jobs.” “ As a party man, I want to be able to campaign for whoever the party is putting up as a candidate, with good results. I don’t want to go to any community, where I will be asked what have you done” the PDP chieftain stated. Professor Gana, described the intervening period between now and the 2011 elections as opportunity for PDP governments at all levels to improve on their performance, saying, “ this is a good encouragement for government at both state and federal level to perform now, that is how to campaign. He however expressed optimism that, the President Umaru Yar’adua led government would meet the yawning of the Nigerian electorates, if the Assembly passes the 2009 budget into law without delay. Gana further dismissed speculations that he might have resigned from politics, adding that, though he has no intention of running for office in the coming elections, “ I haven’t resigned from politics, I am fully in politics. I am sure you know my party assigned me the job of Ambassador of peace to Anambra to try and bring reconciliation there.
