BAYELSA State Government has criticised the siting of the proposed College of Petroleum Technology in Kaduna describing the action of the Federal Government as unjust to the people of the oil and gas rich Niger Delta.
The state governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, has also threatened to sanction any of his aides that makes uncomplimentary remarks about the personality of the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, over their purported face-off, saying he has no problem with the nation's number two citizen.
The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Chief Asara A. Asara, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Yenagoa shortly after the weekly executive council meeting, lamented that the Federal Government is not doing enough to justify the enormous sacrifice and contribution of the oil and gas rich but backward region to the economic growth of the country.
“What is the justification for the federal government to take the petroleum institute to Kaduna ? Our waterways are silting yearly without any assistance from the federal government,” he lamented. Citing Oloibiri community in Bayelsa State to buttress his claim, Chief Asara said, “the ancient community of Oloibiri in Ogbia local government area of the state where the oil was discovered in commercial quantity has been taken over by the bush and trees with nothing to show for its contribution to the growth of the nation economy.
“Our environment is being degraded through gas flaring on daily basis as a result of the oil exploration and exploitation activities.”
Asara who had served in all the previous administrations since the inception of civil rule called on the federal government to rescind its decision to site the petroleum institution in Kaduna and site same in Bayelsa where oil, which is the mainstay of the nation economy was first discovered in commercial quantity.
This he noted will give the people of the state a since of belonging especially with the abandonment of the proposed oil museum in the state.
On the rumoured bickering between the state governor and the vice president, Chief Asara the Governor Sylva had personally made it clear at their executive council meeting that he has no problem with the vice president and as such threatened to sanction any of his aides that make uncomplimentary remarks about the personality of the Vice-President.
The governor, according to the Information Commissioner, holds vice president in high esteem, aside the age difference and will always recognize the Vice-President as his leader and will not do anything that will strain their relationship.
The Information boss also disclosed that a bill aimed at checkmating the activities of the motorcyclists otherwise known as okada riders would soon be forwarded to the state House of Assembly.
The bill after its passage into law he said would be curb the excesses of the okada riders and subsequently reduced accidents and carnage on the road and streets of Yenagoa, the state capital.
