Olubadan's crown illegal, by Ibadan chiefs E-mail

The crisis in the traditional institution in Ibadanland got messier, weekend, as the three village chiefs waiting to be crowned, petitioned the Oyo State Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, that the tradition of the city did not permit the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana, to wear beaded crown.

The Olubadan had, last week, warned the government not to meddle in the traditional affairs of the ancient city and that he reserved the sole authority to wear beaded crown in Ibadanland.

This claim had pitched the monarch against some chiefs in Ibadanland.

In a petition, the three chiefs applauded the governor for his effort to add value to the traditional institution so that it could be rated among others in the South-West zone.

The chiefs are, the Onido of Ido, Chief Benjamin Isola; Onijaye of  Ijaye, Chief Oladejo Egunjobi, and Onilalupon of Lalupon, Chief Akinmoyede Olahanloye.

The chiefs, under the aegis of the Association of Ibadan Outer-City Traditional Council, contended that Odulana's claim that he only had the right to wear beaded crown was untrue and illegal, arguing that he did not have any documentary evidence to back up his claims.

Contrary to the stance of the Olubadan, the chiefs maintained that the customary law did not exclude any qualified baale from wearing beaded crown.

According to them, rather than object to the wearing of beaded crown by baales in Ibadanland, it was the “wearing of crown by Olubadan since 1976 that is most illegal bearing the pledge by Ibadan chiefs to the Resident in 1936 in their application to change from bale to Olubadan of Ibadan.”

The chiefs stressed that if towns such as Ogbomoso, Osogbo, Ede and Ejigbo which had village chiefs as Lalupon and Ijaye in 1904 had been elevated to paramount status with obas wearing crowns, nothing stopped them and other deserving chiefs to be elevated.

I WILL NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THE BELIEF THAT OLUBADAN'S CROWN IS ILLEGAL. I REMEMBER THE WEARING OF CROWN BY THE OLUBADAN AND SHOUN OF OGBOMOSO ARE LEGALLY CONSTITUTED. THE TWO INSTITUTIONS, IF I MAY RECALL, WERE ADDRESSED AS BALES UNTIL THEIR ELEVATIONS AS OBAS. MY ADVICE TO THE GOVERNMENT OF OYO STATE IS TO EVALUATE THE POSITION OF CHIEF ONIDO OF IDO, ONIJAYE OF IJAYE AND LASTLY ONILALUPON OF LALUPON IF THEY ARE GENUINELY QUALIFIED TO BE UPGRADED. THE ISSUE OF UPGRADING LIES LEGALLY WITH THE GOVERNOR NOT THE OLUBADAN. IN ALL, WHAT SHOULD BE MORE PARAMOUNT TO IBADAN LAND IS PEACE AND PROGRESS AND ALL CONCERNED SHOULD WORK TOWARD THE PROGRESS OF OYO STATE.

This is getting interesting. Village heads now wish to wear crowns.Whither is this countery going? A crown is worn by leader who or whose forefathers have ruled an empire.This inordinate rush for titles is making a mess of tradition in Nigeria.

How about a face cap with beads all over !! 
If wearing a beaded crown will create jobs,cleaner inner city or even give these purposeless baales and obas a sense of direction- I suggest that they should wear 2 beaded crowns!!

I believe we need to dig more into history to ascertain facts with regards to this request backed by history by the three chiefs in want of crowns. Was there ever a time before the said 1936 that Ibadan had a crown king? What qualifies a city, town, village or a quarter to be considered good enough to wear a crown? Is wearing of crown purely political or there are more things to it than an authority's pronouncement that it is done? 
I may be biased here, I should sound the warning bell. And it is because I am an Ibadan autochthon-say the son of the soil. My great, great grandfather was a contemporary of the Great Bashorun Ogunmola. Ibadan history is not complete without Ogumola. He hailed from Fesu area of the present Iwo town, with my great progenitor. History of the world resided with oral tradition long before cuneiform or hieroglyphic writings were created and developed. Oral tradition was it that supplied me with the historical facts in my possession. You can take them or leave them. Lagelu was a great hunter who founded Ibadan city. He was said to be a chief from Ife, the cradle of the Yorubas. His place of sojourn by the hills with open, spacious Savannah prospered and grew in name and strength. It became a town with beaded crown kings. Then the disaster came calling. The masquerade festival was the harbinger of destruction. oral tradition informed me that during "Egungun" (masquerade)festival one season a taboo was violated. Masquerade's face was revealed in an open market. This was a death sentence on the then Ibadan city. Old Oyo armed forces stormed the town of Ibadan and sacked it to nothingness. A few of the Ibadan denizens escaped into the hills around the present Eleyele river site, near the present Onido sphere of influence. There they survived only on the snails and the "oro" fruits. Hence the saying: 
"Ibadan omo a j'oro sun, Omo aje'gbin yo, Omo a fi'karunwun f'ori mu." "Ibadan son that eats oro fruit for supper, son that fully satisfy his hunger with snails, son that uses snail shell for a drinking container." From these hills proceeded the new Ibadan from the ashes of Oyo destruction. The crown worn by the past kings of Ibadan before the sack by Oyo was reported to have been destroyed. Hence, getting a new one was not a matter of getting materials and creating a new one. Tradition did not allow it in so short and simple way.  
Subsequently, Ibadan became very, very powerful again. So much that after the fall of old Oyo, Ibadan became the centre of power in Yoruba land. In fact, a new Oyo king, which name just disappeared from my head, was crowned in Ibadan. This is just to show how powerful Ibadan was as at that time. Besides, the Fulani Jihadists' unstoppable train of conquest was stopped by the Ibadans at the battle of Osogbo in 1840. Why those in control of affairs of Ibadan at that time did not ask for the crown to be resuscitated still baffles me till today. The crown was not worn again until the 1976 issue. But let it be known, Ibadan city had a crown. The colonial experience and its resulting socio-political damage on our heritage is clear for all to see. In fact the new socio-political set up is like a strange plague and it is doing what a plague does. Remember the Eqypt of Moses' plague
