Bakassi: Senator accuses c’ttees of delaying resolution

Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw (PDP, Cross River South) has petitioned the three Senate Committees mandated to investigate the circumstances under which the Bakassi peninsula was ceded to Cameroon over their inability to submit a report nearly one year after they were given the assignment.
Ewa-Henshaw who represented the former Bakassi peninsula in separate letters to the three Committees accused them of holding up a Senate resolution on the issue despite the timely response of President Umaru Yar‘Adua to the issue.
Following a motion by Senators Ewa-Henshaw and Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) in November 2007, the Senate had requested President Yar‘Adua to forward a copy of the Green Tree Agreement (GTA) under which Nigeria and Cameroon agreed the transfer of the Bakassi peninsula to the later.
Following the President’s response in early December, the Senate had mandated its Committees on Foreign Affairs, Judiciary and States and Local Governments to study the agreement and make recommendations to the Senate.
But alleging the failure of Senate Committees to act, Ewa-Henshaw in his letter dated 24th November, 2008 to the three Committee chairmen wrote:
“I am compelled to again return to the issue of Bakassi and to draw your attention to public concern being expressed over the continued delay in the presentation and debate of your report on the public hearings conducted in July 2008.
“We are again faced with accusations of inaction and dereliction of duty something we have been confronted with in the past over our previous handling of this matter.
The Senate Resolution asking the President to submit the Green Tree Agreement was passed in November 2007. The President responded promptly and the matter was referred to your Committees in December 2007.’’
