AWKA—THE Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sir Mike Okiro, has called for more Public/Police partnership in crime control and prevention in the country, saying that without adequate security, Nigeria’s hope of joining the 20 world best economy by the year 2020 would not be achieved.
Okiro spoke weekend in Onitsha, Anambra State, while commissioning the Police Community Relation Committee (PCRC) multi-million Naira Multi Purpose secretariat at the Central Police Station (CPS), Onitsha.
He said that the police has put in place a project which is community based, which, he added, would encourage the Police to strive hard to provide the public with better quality service delivery.
“It is said that to whom much is given, much is also expected and members of the public will also be encouraged to interact more freely with the Police for greater information flow through improved trust and confidence in the Police. “My vision for the Nigeria Police is closely tied to the vision of President Umaru Yar’ Adua, which is of course taking Nigeria to the league of the world’s twenty best economies by the year 2020.”
According to him, the essence of the vision and mission is to create a safer and more secured environment conducive for meaningful socio-economic development through crime prevention and control, adding that the rationale stemmed from the fact that there could be no meaningful socio-economic development without internal security, domestic peace, law and order.
He noted that in community -based crime prevention programme, cooperation and collaboration between the local communities and the police was of utmost importance if the desired objective was to be achieved.
The IG said that one of the objectives for the establishment of the PCRC was realized with the project and urged them to build more recreation facilities for the police, including Inspectors’ Mess and canteens in the various Police Divisions, so as to encourage members of the public to interact with the Police for greater information flow.
