HOPE seems to have been raised for the take-off of the much desired dry port projects to boost the nation’s economy as construction work will soon commence in one of the six dry ports in the country, the Isiala Ngwa Inland Container Depot (ICD).
CONTAINERS
This followed the presentation of the Certificate of Occupancy (CoO) for the land where the dry port at Isiala Ngwa located at Ntigha to Abia State Government in Umuahia by the Federal Government, through the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Shippers Council, Captain Adamu Biu. Abia Government, in turn handed the certificate over to Eastgate, the concessio-naires of the depot.
The absence of CoO for the site of the project is one of the major hindrances to the construction of the project. The other problem is payment of compensation which Eastgate has commenced and the host community has welcomed them as indicated by the traditional ruler of Ntigha, Eze Robert Nwigwe.
Addressing the delegation of Nigeria Shippers Council, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Captain Adamu Biu, who delivered the Certificate of Occupancy to Abia State, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Chris Akomas commended the both shippers council and Eastgate for their tireless effort in ensuring that the project is built.
Akomas also commended the host community for donating the land and assured of Government’s readiness to provide the necessary infrastructure for the project to come on stream, saying that the government is interested in the project because of its benefit to Abia and the entire South-East.
“Inland Container Depot is an important project to the entire South-East and we will do all we can to make it work. We hope that the job will be completed within the 30 months stipulated. Abia State Government has the project in mind that is why when we discovered that the new rail line does not pass through there, we drew the attention of the authorities, and hopefully something is being done about it.
“Do not be deterred by the news of kidnapping. It is not an Abia problem, it is a national problem. It is a new face of crime. Do not have any fear, the Government will provide you with adequate security”, Akomas said.
Earlier, in his remark before presenting the C o O, Captain Biu explained that there six inland container depots in the country but that Abia own is the first to get the certificate, and attributed it to the hard work and seriousness of the concessionaires. Accordin g to Biu, “from now, we expect Eastgate to commence construction. They have 30 months to complete the project”, Biu said.
Chief Executive of Eastgate, Mr. Bill Nkemdirim, in his remarks promised to deliver on or even before the stipulated 30 months.
