In a country where the reading culture is inconsistent with the challenges of having quality products from our education system who can hold their own globally, a place to get the right books that will make the difference in learning and character has become inevitable.
Exquisitely built, with a serene courtyard, an imposing architectural masterpiece, tucked in a location which Shepherd House book centre reverberates with life and activity, which till a short time ago was isolated, without prospects of bustling future, Shepherd House, at 1, Oniru Estate, New Market Road, first turning on the right after the first Lekki Roundabout, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, is the place to go for the best books. It is said that in the best books, great men talk to us, give us their most precious thoughts, and pour their souls into ours. God be thanked for books. They are the voices of the distant and the dead, and make us heirs of the spiritual life of past ages. At Shepherd House, great books abound; spanning all areas of knowledge, disciplines and specialization: The Book Centre moved from City Mall to its present location at Oniru Estate, with expansive space in which the books are displayed in sophisticated, state-of-the art shelves and compartment. Retail and wholesale distribution are done. Books on display ranged from Bibles, Christian Literature, Management/Business, Inspirational, Motivational, Educational, History, Politics, Journals, Family, Adults, Parenting, to Marriage, Men, Women, Singles, Young Adult, Children, Fiction and Juvenile. Others are Medical, Computer books, Autobiographies, References, Health, Military, Science, Arts, Music, Current World Affairs, Cooking, Technology, and General. Aptly described as “your one-stop Book Centre,” also available are posters, Gift items/cards, religious symbols, Holy Pictures, Crucifixes, Sacramentals, Devotional, Messages on Cassette and Compact Discs, etc. Because of the relocation of the Book Centre from the City Mall at Onikan to the obscurity of Oniru Estate, New Market Road, on Lekki. Phase I, which however is fast becoming a busy, commercial area, Vanguard Education Weekly, asked an official of the bookshop if patronage has been affected: “People are coming here since we moved from City Mall. Those customers who are coming to the Mall are being told that we are now here in this new place that belong to us. This book centre is part of Harvest Investments Company Limited. Our customers are coming down here,”she said. As I glanced meticulously at the different shelves containing almost all kinds of books dealing on assorted subjects, the young lady and another young man were anxious to help me in getting the book I needed. It was not my first visit. I had come twice, fascinated by the Book Centre, seeking to speak with the Chief Executive Officer, but to no avail. “Our chief executive is a very busy woman. This is not the only business she is doing and so it is difficult to get her in the office. You have to try and come again. She is very busy all the time. Vanguard was here before for an interview. But I will tell her Vanguard has come again,” said Ms. Ada, a senior official at the Book Centre. She assured that her boss will talk with me when the time is appropriate, but not now. The chief executive, Dr. (Mrs) Kalejaye, is hardworking, committed and passionate about books, an emerging key player in the education sector. From the configuration of the Book Centre, her strong Christian Faith is evident. At Shepherd House, “Jesus is lifted up on high,” according to a flyer. With immense potentials, creative ability, she has taken the book business to another level of sophistication and astuteness. The strength of the book centre is Christian literature, hinged on the Bible, with different versions, orthodox, modern, Catholic essentially, and other denominations. There are children bibles. Apart from being a book of faith, doctrine, morals, religion and a book of special revelation from God, the Bible is also a book which teaches man how to behave, his responsibility, his own dignity and equality with his fellow man. According to Smith Wigglesworth; “The word of God changes a man until he becomes an Epistle of God. If I read a newspaper, I come out dirtier than I went in, if I read my Bible, I come out cleaner than I went in, and I like being clean.” No wonder that as you enter the book centre in Shepherd House the first impression is that, it is a place with so much allure for Christianity and the word of God. Beyond that, as one goes into the inner recess of the centre, there are great books, worth reading and worth buying. Books are not meant for furniture, but there is nothing else than so beautifully furnished Shepherd House. No furniture so charming as the books found in this magnificent white house. Dr. (Mrs.) Kalejaye seems to have put everything right in establishing the book centre. More than 3,000 books, journals are on the shelves. Opportunity exists for marketers and outlets for wholesale distribution, creating business ventures for enterprising people. There is a section in the book centre, going by the name – Data Point Limited, a business centre for photocopying, computer typesetting and internet browsing. “People can come here for typesetting, to make photocopies of documents and browse. You can either do it yourself by operating any of the computers or give it to the man in charge who will do the job,” explained a young man in charge of the business centre. ICT is an aspect of the complex book trade at Shepherd House. Educational institutions, students, parents, teachers, scholars, researchers, children, men, women, adults, young and old, will find books suitable to each of them in this place. As one saying goes, “the only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance.” It is chiefly through books that we acquire knowledge, become educated and enjoy intercourse with superior minds. Make it a day with Shepherd House and you will find the experience highly rewarding and stimulating. |
