A TOTAL 3,463 Law graduates from various universities including the Editor of Sunday Vanguard, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, were yesterday called to the Nigerian bar after scaling through the tough 2008 bar examination.
But a total 1,620 candidates who also sat for the same bar examinations in August this year, were not as lucky.
According to the Director General of the school, Dr. Tahir Mamman, seven of the successful graduates had First Class, 177 had a Second Class Upper Division, 784 had a Second Class Lower Division, 2,492 had a pass while a total 210 were graduated on conditional pass.
He said that the examination was hitch free.
Also commenting on the bar examination, the secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Yusuf S Usman said a total 5,290 candidates sat for the bar examinations out of which only 3,460 representing 64.51% passed.
The Chairman, Body of Benchers, Elder Simeon Olakunri (SAN) who admitted the candidates into the Nigerian Bar charged them to be of good conduct and not to betray the confidence reposed in them.
According to him, it was not only their academic brilliance that earned them the honour, but the humility, integrity and virtues, which they exhibited while in school.
To the delight of the crowd, Dr Mamman disclosed that the school has begun to implement new curriculum.
The curriculum, he explained, comprised five study modules: Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Corporate Law, Property Law, and Professional Conduct/Responsibility/Ethics.
“These will be complemented by some skills modules such as research, drafting and Legal Writing, Advocacy, Interviewing and Dispute Resolution,”

“It is a fact that students spend most of their quality time in the Universities, while the role of the Nigerian Law School is to fine-tune them in practice and procedure,” Mamman added
To achieve desired impact, the D.G said the school has taken steps to extend the reforms to law faculties in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He commended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Kutigi, Supreme Court Justices, and the top hierarchy of the Bar represented by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Olurotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and Chief Afe Babalola for their supports.
