The former President of Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN) Chris Uwaje, is a man the mention of his name evokes deep feelings of academic and professional pursuit in the IT sector.
Instead of Mr. Uwaje, the Oracle of Nigerian IT industry to face his business unmoved by the IT illiteracy that surrounds Nigerians, he has become a crusader of a sort.
Thus, in the last couple of years, beginning with his role as president of the Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN), Uwaje who has never mixed IT with politics, has galvanised his colleagues, and waged a war against computer or IT illiteracy.
His background has surely played an important role in preparing Uwaje for the consistent campaign that he wages against IT illiteracy. With over two decades in IT practice that has taken him from Europe to America and then to Africa, his specialisations are a pointer to his focus: project conceptualisation, design, implementation, management and technical support. Uwaje has also been involved on these continents in such area as software engineering solutions and research as well as design and development.
His links to various associations and professional bodies are testimonies to the man’s apparent natural calling. Besides being president of ITAN, Uwaje was the first vice president of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria, a fellow of the institute of Analysts and Programmers, and Institute of Certified Professionals both of United Kingdom. Back home, he is member of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria, as well as member of the Nigeria Computer Society, among others.
Mr. Uwaje has not left his nation in doubt about his quest. As such, he has served as member of the National Committee for the Acquisition of Computer and Electronic Technology (NACACET), and when the fear of the millennium bug was becoming daunting, Chris was one of the few professionals drafted to prepare the grounds for averting any possible consequences. He has been consultant to the federal government, international companies like D-Link as well as IT consultant to several state governments.
Today, Nigeria has an Information Technology Policy. Chris Uwaje was one of the few IT experts that worked tirelessly for its actualisation. Uwaje, under the ITAN 2000 project, pioneered the conceptual establishment and eventual adoptions of the National IT policy.
Mr. Uwaje was educated at Cologne German Language School, the Hamburg University Gast Horer (where he studied Informatics Science Study), Control Data Institute, where he studied computer programming and systems analysis.
An erudite scholar, Mr. Uwaje is reputed for his numerous articles concerning national and international issues on ICT. For his consistency and self denial for the good of fatherland, Mr. Uwaje is today honoured as the IT Personality of the Year 2008.
