This weekend, Nigeria’s flag will be flying very high in Monaco, that city of pleasure that remains a principality by law.
It is the World Music Award and global stars including a good injection of Nigerian pop icons will be gathered to be honoured for the great job for, and contributions to the world of music. But apart from the participation of the Nigerian artists, it is Daar Communications Plc that is hoisting the Nigerian flag.
The broadcaster of AIT, Raypower and the recently launched Daarsat, has seized the occasion to convince the world that its foray into satellite operations and direct-to-home TV is not a ruse.
“We are a major sponsor,” Chairman of the organization, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi told this writer, “and we will be taking the event live on our channels.”
The awards will hold on November 9, 2008. But history is on the side of Nigeria now. For the first time a Nigerian broadcaster will host the stars to a pre-event dinner on November 8, 2008 in a razzle dazzle occasion that will have Nigeria’s Tu Face Idibia, Sasha, Kelly Hansen and Timaya in attendance.
A cursory look at the invited stars to the awards include: Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Duffy, Estelle, Enrique Iglesias, Kid Rock, Anastacia, The Killers, Solange, The Script, Ne-Yo and Ringo Star.
These are some of the people that Dr Raymond Dokpesi will host to the dinner announcing the awards. In a message published in the events brochure, Dokpesi said: “I bring you glad tidings from the continent of Africa. Africa is proud to be associated with the 2008 World Music Awards.
“Daar Communications Plc, the biggest, brightest and most exciting private broadcast initiative out of Africa, is indeed delighted to be fully associated with the two events of the World Music Festival, the pre-event party and the World Music Awards.
“The broadcast hob of Daar Communications Plc is the serene and beautiful city of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital City.
“Nigeria abounds with musical talents which Daar Communications Plc in conjunction with indigenous record labels and artiste promoters is nurturing and I am happy to inform you that some of these talents have demonstrated that they are as good as the best the world can offer.
“As you honour the best of available global talent, and celebrate them over a global television network, Daar Communications Plc owned and promoted channel: Ray Power FM, Africa Independent Television, will alongside our owned and operated multi-channel direct-to-home pay TV platform, DaarSat, beam the event to millions of Nigerians back home.
The company currently operates a network of 24 radio stations and 23 television stations in Nigeria on free to air basis.
All the events would be beamed live through the Daar platform – AIT, Raypower FM and DaarSat. Before leaving for Monaco on Tuesday Dokpesi said a prayer that he would wish that a Nigerian musician bring home an award.
