MAIDUGURI—Borno State Government says it has provided fertilisers and other agricultural input for rice irrigation schemes in Abadam,Yau and Daya in Abadam Local Government Area.
Alhaji Mohammed Damchida, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri , that the measure was to encourage rice farmers and boost their yields.
He said the three irrigation schemes, which started operation in the 1970s, but was later abandoned by the previous administrations, could produce large tons of rice to cater for the needs of the state and beyond.
The Commissioner said the state was in a desert area, its soil was very favourable and fertile enough for all sorts of irrigation activities.
He said this was the reason the state government was willing to spend whatever amount that was required to revamp rice and vegetable production in the area.
Damchida said the present administration had repaired the dams located in the area, to ensure continued water supply to the irrigation farms.
He urged farmers participating in the irrigation activities to rededicate themselves to agricultural production.
