Glo Lagos Marathon winners to cart away $240,000, 2 Kia Picanto cars

THE next edition of the Glo Lagos International Half Marathon will hold on February 21, 2009 with winners carting home $210,000 (about N24.8m), two Kia Picanto cars and an additional sum of N3.5 million for Nigerian winners.

At a joint world press conference with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in Lagos on Tuesday, Globacom, the title sponsor, said that it has raised the bar for the next edition of the Glo Lagos International Half Marathon by making special provision for Nigerian elite athletes who might not stand a chance of winning the star prizes against the international elite athletes and world champions who have already signified their intention to run the race.
World champion, Haile Gabresellasie will lead 100 elite international runners to the race. Globacom’s Executive Director, Human Resources, Mr. Adewale Sangowawa, announced the theme of the marathon as “Run for The Heart”, adding that the theme enjoins every participant to run not only for the health of his or her own heart, but also for the health of other Nigerians.
He disclosed that the marathon would be used to raise money for the Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF). “I am pleased to announce that Globacom has entered into a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF), to raise money for research into, as well as the prevention and cure of cardiovascular diseases.”
He said the theme underscores the health focus of this year’s event as well as the spirit of charity behind it. In a presentation, Mrs. Omodele Sarafa-Yusuf, while breaking down the prize scheme, said the overall winners in the male & female categories, will receive $50,000 each, the first runner up in the male and female categories will get $25,000 each while the second runner up in the male & female categories will cart home $15,000 each. Also, the third runner up in the male & female categories will win $10,000 each while the 4th runner up in the male & female categories will win $5,000 each.
She said the first Nigerian male and female winners will go home with brand new Kia Picanto cars each while the second set of Nigerians to finish the race in the male and female categories will get N1m each. Globacom will also cap the special provision for the Nigerian runners with N750,000 each for the third Nigerians in the male & female categories to finish the race.
Sarafa-Yusuf also disclosed that the race will be covered live by Super Sports and NTA while ChampionChip S.A will provide timing chips and race number printing for all the half marathoners and the Corporate Fun Runners to ensure timing accuracy of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon.
She assured that Globacom in conjunction with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, the organisers of the marathon, will surpass last year’s record and make this edition the most exciting ever in the history of marathon in Nigeria.
