THE family of Ebenezer Aisien who was shot dead by a mobile policeman attached to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega station in Benin City, last September, yesterday, shunned entreaties from the management of the Mega station to pay compensation to the family in order to enable them commence operations.
Vanguard gathered that the management of Total Oil, who are incharge of running the mega station had agreed to pay the sum of N1.8million as compensation to the family but the offer was rejecting by the family since according to them, apart from the fact that the police was yet to conclude investigations into the matter, the issue is still before the palace of the Oba of Benin, Oba Erediuwa and the state House of Assembly.
Since the killing of Ebenizer by the trigger happy mobile policeman, whose whereabout is still unknown, the mega station had remained closed after the youths of Ogbelaka vowed to set the place ablaze if the incident that led to the death of Ebenizer was not properly investigated.
Following the seriousness of the incident, the palace of the Oba of Benin and the state House of Assembly waded into the matter to find lasting solution to the problem.
Vanguard learnt that state Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Jega and the management of the mega station, were invited by the palace to come and explain the cause of the incident.
Vanguard learnt however that the management of the mega station are tired of the prolong closure of the station because of the lost they have incurred, therefore they are seeking a permanent deal with the family to enable them commence business.
But the family saw their action as an attempt to cut corners and undermine the on-going investigation into the matter by both the police and the Oba of Benin.
However, younger brother to the deceased, Oduwa Aisien who spoke to Vanguard shortly after the meeting with the management of the mega station yesterday at their residence, explained that “ they said they came to commiserate with us over the death of my brother and wanted to give us some money. But we said no because the matter is before the Oba and the state House of Assembly.
We told them we cannot collect any thing from any body until the investigations are concluded. We believe that the palace of the Oba and the state House of Assembly will handle the matter and tell us what to do.
“We are not kin about money because no amount of money can bring my brother back. It is very sad because he left a wife and children before he died. So we want justice to prevail and not money” he stated.
