LAGOS State Government has commenced the construction of 2,500 new prototype class rooms as well as rehabilitation of 1,000 class rooms across the state.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele who disclosed this in his office at the weekend, stressed that the overall objective of the state government’s investment in education is to equip its young ones with “cutting edge knowledge, ability, skills and competences necessary for them to maximize the use of their potentials.” According to Bamidele, the exercise which is an ongoing project has seen 166 public schools rehabilitated so far under the aggressive execution of phase five of the Schools Infrastructure Rehabilitation Programme. He stressed that, “while the government is engaging in repair and painting of classrooms, fencing of schools, provision of toilets, libraries, benches and chairs, boreholes and generators to power them, we are also paying attention to providing constant training for teachers in the state public schools.” The commissioner added that 2000 teachers drawn from public schools across the state were trained on instructional material usage; another 1099 teachers underwent training on early childhood care and development education while 2400 secondary school teachers were given leadership skill by Ministry of Establishment and Training. Bamidele noted that the free distribution of close to six million textbooks on core subjects to nursery and primary schools in the State is informed by its commitment to free, qualitative and functional education. He pointed out that the state government is adopting a holistic approach to its investment in education. “The free distribution of textbooks in all public nursery and primary schools in the state is in fulfilment of the campaign promise of the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola “The acquisition of proper skills and proper grooming of pupils for them to meet their future challenges are germane to the success of every nation.” this Bamidele said, accounted for investment of the state government in education. He maintained that the exercise which covered 1030 primary schools in the state would be extended to 627 public secondary schools very soon. Others efforts in this direction, according to Bamidele included the training of 5000 teachers and 24 master trainers in 604 public schools on family Life health Education and recruitment of 167 NCE teachers for primary and junior secondary schools. He stated that payment of West African Examination Council (WAEC)/Senior Secondary School Examination fees for students, building libraries, payment of bursary for indigent students and local and international scholarship are major focus of the administration of the Governor Fashola. While commending the support of individuals and corporate bodies at complementing the government’s efforts, Bamidele called for more of such gesture. |
