“As it is written in the prophets...”. (Mark 1:2). Mark, was directed by the Holy Spirit to present the manifestation, ministry and message of Christ by quoting the Prophets.
The prophetic and apostolic ministries have always been foundational in knowing, understanding, and walking with Christ (1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 2:19-22).
The current restoration of the understanding of the ministry; functioning and power of the Prophets Ministry should be seen not as an end by itself (henceforth camping and moving no further). This has been the mistake, of many leaders of previous moves of God. It should be viewed as a ministry which prepares the way, and provided a platform that ushers in the manifestation of salvation, deliverance, reformation and eventually, the manifestation of the sons of God, that will cover the earth with God’s glory and witness the return of Christ Jesus.
The prophets of the Old Testament were the mouthpiece of God in speaking to His people; by revealing the mind, and plans of God. In this dispensation, by the Spirit of Wisdom, Understanding and Revelation, prophets and apostles are being raised up to prepare the way for the coming of the LORD.
A prophet is God’s anointed and commissioned spokesman. In Strong’s exhaustive concordance, the word prophet is from the word Nabi which means; one who proclaims, or tells a message he has received. He is a spokesman, herald, or announcer.
A prophet is someone who announces a message at the command of another. A prophet is Yahweh’s commissioned spokesman. A prophet, or prophetess, must be commissioned by God. The call and commissioning can take different forms. a) In Jeremiah 1:4-10; we see that Jeremiah was ordained, before he was born but was commissioned while he was a youth. This call is therefore before conception.
b) In 1 King 19:19-21; we see the calling of Elisha, a farmer who was busy plowing, till Elijah cast his mantle on him. He had to go through training process for a while under the leadership. Mentoring, fathering, and tutoring of Elijah, till he was commissioned to start ministry, after the departure of Elijah.
c) In Amos 7:14-15, we can see that Amos was an adult-shepherd and a farmer, he had no relative who was a prophet. He was just pursuing his career when God called and commissioned him go and prophesy.
A prophet is usually equipped with the WORD of God - the Dabar of God. God told Jeremiah, “I have put my words in your mouth.” Dabar means the word that has a creative living energy to bring forth, or produce when spoken. The words of the Lord in the mouth of the prophet make him or her to carry the burden of obedience. He or she is responsible and will experience judgement for false word.
A prophets is also equipped with insight and revelation. Revelation knowledge into scripture and revelation into the realm of the Spirit. Revelation into the realm of the Spirit can be visionary, perceptive or predictive.
a) Revelation can be visionary; when there is a flow of dreams, vision, and trances. b) Revelation can be predictive’ when is a flow of word of knowledge, word of wisdom, and discerning of spirits.
c) Revelation can be predictive. This is when a prophet can tell you what will happen in the future. A good example in the new testament is the ministry of Agabus - Acts 11:28 and Acts 21:10 Prophets, cannot bring additions or subtraction to scriptures, rather, they illuminate, and bring further specific to what already is in the scriptures.
Prophets, like the others in the five fold ministry are human gifts. And according to Ephesians 4:7-15. they are also to perfect the saints. Prophets like the others in the five fold ministry are servants. Christ must be exalted.
