EKITI State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC), has vowed to conduct the council polls on December 20 as scheduled despite the court’s action instituted by the Action Congress (AC), and the National Conscience Party (NCP).
AC and NCP had instituted separate court actions faulting the clearance of members of EKSIEC by the state House of Assembly The commission Chairman, Major-General Kayode Oni (retd), who spoke with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, said the commission is more prepared than before to ensure the success of the council election. He said the commission has nothing to hide, stressing that the results of the forthcoming local government election would be collated and announced at various wards across the state in order not to give room for any manipulation. He, therefore, warned all the political parties that are proposing boycott of the exercise to have a rethink. According to him, the threat by some political parties to boycott the election is not enough reason for the commission not to conduct the election as there is no section of the constitution that stops the electoral body from conducting scheduled poll due to boycott by any party. He said the commission was working in collaboration with the House of Assembly committee on SIEC headed by Mr. Bolu Komolafe, a member of AC, while the Deputy Speaker, also an AC member and member of the committee, adding that it is not true that the commission is being telegiuded by the PDP-led government of Governor Segun Oni. He assured that the commission would provide a level playing ground for everybody to operate. |
