The administration of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State will clock one year on Sunday. Ahead of the anniversary, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ogbonna Nwuke yesterday briefed newsmen on the achievements of the government, saying it had succeeded in creating an enabling environment for residents to go about their businesses unmolested
He said before the administration came on board residents lived in fear because gunmen who styled themselves militants had held the state under siege. “We have been able to lay the foundation for peace in the state.
This stability has given room for growth and development”, he said. Government, he added, had also revisited the problem of power supply in the state and enhanced health delivery. Already, N15 billion had been spent on the sector.
“We have spent fifteen billion naira so far on the power sector. And more money would still be spent. We want to link up all communities to the national grid. We are at the verge of completing the Omoku gas turbine. The problem we have at the moment is distribution of power that is the responsibility of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria”.
On his part, the commissioner for works, Mr. Dakuku Peterside said about one hundred billion naira was earmarked for road construction in the last one year of the administration. He said the allocation had not been exhausted as roads were still being constructed.
On the problem of water, he said the government was making effort to see that residents of the state capital had access to pipe borne water. Engineering design for this project he said had already been completed
It would be recalled that the government came on board last year after a Supreme Court judgment delivered on October 25 of the same year sacked the government of Celestine Omehia. Consequently, Rotimi Amaechi was sworn in on the 26 October.
