Director-General of Bureau of Public Procurement, Engr. Emeka Ezeh says strict compliance with the Procurement Act will drastically curb corruption in the country.
He spoke at the National Sensitization and Interactive Forum on the Public Procurement Act for the South South Zone which held at the Metropolitan Hotel in Calabar, Cross River State. According to him, “the Public Procurement, if faithfully implemented will guide Nigeria on a positive path of prudence and probity in the management of our resources to address the complex challenges facing the nation in all ares.” Continuing, he said, “I recommend the Procurement Act for all to read, use and apply in the management of our public resources. The benefit of a planned public procurement process is the engine of efficient services delivery.” Engr. Ezeh argued that “there is a strong link between poor porous public procurement and its attendant corruption and failure of national governments especially in developing countries to meet the aspirations of their citizens in the critical areas of infrastructure, basic amenities such as electricity, water, efficient affordable transportation, security of lives and property, economic growth as well as attainment of a socially harmonious nation.” Also speaking Governor Liyel Imoke, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Efiok Cobham noted “with every passing day, events around the world compel us to develop policies which help us to make the best use of available resources in a manner that will ensure efficiency in public service delivery. “I am therefore, extremely delighted to be at this formal presentation of the Public Procurement Act which is meant to put in place, a legal framework for the institutionalization of public procurement reforms throughout the country.” While describing public procurement reforms as critical to the overall objective of improving the state’s financial management and enhancing its public service delivery, he said they have therefore, “tailored our policies towards the enthronement of prudence, transparency and accountability in all our expenditures. Indeed, our mission in creating the Due Process and Price Intelligence Department as a separate and independent entity, is to promote an open and transparent system.” |
