THE United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Robin Sanders has charged the National Assembly to uphold the tenets of democracy in Nigeria saying that the success or failure of the system rests with the legislature.
The American envoy who exchanged views with the leadership of the Senate ahead of her country’s Presidential election in November said that the legislature was strategic in upholding the success of democracy in any country. The President of the Senate, Senator David Mark who led the Senate delegation at the session on his part affirmed that the Senate was conscious of its duties and promised not to fail in that regard. “The success or failure of democracy in Nigeria rests with the National Assembly. So, you must make it work because other arms of government depend on the legislature to survive,” the American envoy was quoted as saying in a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Mr. Paul Mumeh. Stressing her own study of the legislature, she said: “I know the strategic role of the legislature if democracy must thrive in Nigeria.” While promising to maintain the good relationship between Nigeria and the United States, she called for cooperation from Nigerians ahead of the November elections. “It will be an interesting and unique election,” Ms Sanders said of the elections pitting the Democratic Barak Obama against the Republican candidate John McCain. Promising that the Senate would not forsake its responsibilities ahead of the election, Senator Mark said: “We are conscious of our position and roles. If we do well, democracy will survive and we shall not do otherwise,” he stated. “Every democracy has got its own peculiarity. We are aware of some basic ingredients such as freedom of speech and association. But ours may not be like yours.” |
