Umuahia—GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia State has called for professional and para-military training for forest rangers in the country.
The governor made the call yesterday in Umuahia at the opening session of the 32nd Annual Conference of Forestry Association of Nigeria (FAN).
Orji, who was represented by Chief Johnny Ukpabi, the Commissioner for Public Utilities and Water Resources, also said Abia could not be isolated from the problems of global warming and climate change.
“The high population pressure on the small land area seems to have complicated the complex environmental problems.
“These ranged from gully and sheet erosions, flooding and over exploitation of natural resources to pollution arising from solid wastes and loss of bio-diversity,” he said.
Orji pointed out that his administration had continued to fund strategic projects notwithstanding the financial burden involved in tackling environmental problems.
