MULTINATIONAL oil firms operating in Rivers State have been told to appoint indigenes of the area into their top management positions.
Deputy governor of the state, Engr Tele Ikiru who spoke at the signing ceremony of OML 58 Upgrade, EPSCC Total E and P Nigeria Limited in Port Harcourt said the government was not satisfied with the kind of placements given to indigenes of the state in their employ. According to him, the government would not compromise its state employment law, pointing out that it would soon clamp down on offending firms. He continued that the current administration would continue to cooperate and support the oil and gas sector to carry out its operations, it would not take lightly situations where the companies fail to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state and its citizenry. He blamed part of the problems in the Niger Delta on the oil sector, regretting that many youths of the region have died as a result of the nonchallant behaviour of the companies. The deputy governor, however, commended Total for its efforts, describing it as a beautiful bride that is loved by all, adding “if at the time of oil exploration in Nigeria, total was in operation the situation would have changed for better”, and called on other oil companies to emulate Total. While commending Saipem, Ponticelli and Saipem for signing the contract, he urged Total to do more for its operational bases. In their separate speeches, representatives of the three contracting companies assured that they would do everything possible to achieve the desired goals and put down sustainable development projects for their host communities while carrying out the OML 58 project. Earlier, a representative of the Egi community in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government area of the state, Mr. Oris Onyiri while urging the companies to consider the indigenes in the scheme of things assured of peace and co-operation of Egi people. |
