Moris Coreman would like to see changes in the Nigerian domestic football. The Belgian technical adviser of Enyimba bared his mind after the ouster of the Nigerians from the Champions League. Ahly eliminated Enyimba 1-0 in Cairo.

“I have been around in Nigeria. Enyimba are the best in the country. If our best cannot match the best in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, South Africa and some other places, then there is a big problem that we have to look into. That problem is the Nigerian league. Players are not on contract, pitches are not good etc. Enyimba were champions in 2003 and in 2004.
How many of the players who won the cup then are still around? None. But in Ahly, there are players who have been there for the past eight years and more. The players understand themselves better that way. Coaching is even better that way.
It is a Nigerian problem. Something has to be done to the league to make some of our players stay. If the pay is good and other conditions are good, Nigerian players will not be crazy about Europe. Even if some leave, the league will still have quality players. Ahly have about seven players in their national team. Enyimba have none.
Therefore, I think that Enyimba are a great Nigerian side that could be best in Africa consistently if the Nigerian league is as good as that in Egypt, Tunisia or South Africa. I feel bad that we lost to Ahly this way. I feel bad because we played well on the day we lost. If we played like this in Aba we could have won the match. That would have made a lot of difference and we could have been in the final. But I want to see Nigerian players play with their hearts out for the country. I want to see them more committed.
That could happen if the pay and other conditions are good. But from the way they behave, you cannot guarantee their 100 percent patriotism. Players of Ahly were in higher spirit in the match. I want to see that in Nigerian players,” Coreman said after the match in Cairo.
The crowd also played a great part in gingering the home team. Their attendance and cheering made nonsense of what you see in Nigerian stadia. They have better football culture.
Former Governor of the Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu kept in touch with Enyimba before, during and after the match. He called to wish them well before the game started and at half time made several calls to urge them on. When the team lost, he sent words that they should ensure they win the league and come out better next season.
“Enyimba will continue to be great. I know that they lost players they registered for the Champions League and could have done better if those players were around. But it is football. You must be a good winner and a good loser. I think that they will be stronger next year from what I gather,” Kalu said.
