Gas: NAPE calls for aggressive exploration activities

IN order for Nigeria to increase its present gas reserves from 182 Trillion cubic Feet (TcF) to 600tcf and become the fourth largest gas reserve in the world there has to be an intense and aggressive exploration for gas as there is for oil at present.
Oil mast
These were the exact words of Dr. Kingsley Ojoh, President, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) during its annual Pre-conference workshop and seminar which has its theme as ‘Gas and the Nigerian Energy Industry’ in Lagos during the week.
He further stated that what is regularly quoted as Nigeria’s gas reserves are mere incidental finds in the course of exploring for oil.
“In the past, the industry has systematically avoided drilling for gas, it is now time to dust up leads and prospects in our portfolios so as to mature them for drilling if government really want more gas reserves for the future.”
According to him Nigeria has ranked among the top ten countries in the world with the most proven natural resources. Nigeria is thus blessed with abundant petroleum and natural gas resources, two of the country’s major liquid and gaseous mineral products.
“Natural Gas is a vital component of the world’s energy supply and is one of the most useful of all energy sources, which can and may take over from crude oil at and after ‘Peak Oil’ hypothesis. It has clearly become and continues to be the fuel choice in developed as well as developing countries.
In recent years, it has become clear that Nigeria, already well known as a major quality oil producer, is just as much or perhaps more of a gas than oil province. Gas reserves are conservatively estimated at more than 180 trillion cubic feet (tcf) and this represents over 5 percent of the world’s total amount of gas and the undiscovered potential is considered to be huge.”
Dr. Ojoh who compared Nigeria to other countries with similar or smaller gas reserve endowments, stated that the nation is only at the initial stages of the gas development process. “The deepwater gas finds for instance, have no policy guidelines, how are we then producing our deepwater fields with all the associated gas? who does the gas belong to and on what terms?”
He also noted that the country is deficient in power production, which is a pre-requisite for the implementation of a natural industrialization program. “The agricultural sector is plagued by a dearth of fertilizers for the realization of national agricultural aspirations. But Nigeria can become solid regional and international gas supplier if its development is properly harnessed, planned and administered.”
The NAPE President was quick to note that failure of the federal government to harness its copious gas resources has had serious negative consequences in Nigeria. This, he said is particularly apparent in the power sector, where unreliable or non-existent gas supplies have contributed to the below par-economic development and inhibition of foreign direct investment inflow into the Nigerian economy.
“NAPE has always identified herself with topical issues in the country and we have made constructive contributions through our pre-conference workshops in the past. In the recent past, we have issued communiques on marginal fields, Nigerian content, gas flare-out program etc, which have received adequate attention by government and have formed the bedrock of government policies on the subjects. I am sure that the communique that will emerge at the end of this workshop will receive similar attention by government.” he stressed.
