EFCC targets Nigerians living above their income E-mail

ARE you living above your income? Well, you may have to account for your wealth under an amendment being proposed to the law establishing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). And should you fail to convince the commission, prosecution awaits you.

Chairman of the commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri, is scheduled to meet with the Senate Committee on Financial Crimes on Wednesday on the proposed amendment.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics, Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, Senator Sola Akinyede, confirmed the development at the weekend.

Senator Akinyede promised that the Wednesday session would be a “robust interactive session” during which the Committee is expected to receive Mrs. Waziri’s submission on how the amendment could be incorporated into the proposed amendment of the EFCC Act.

The amendment bill is, however, yet to be presented to the National Assembly.

Senator Akinyede, confirming the quest by the anti-graft agency at the weekend, said a “similar provision is in the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) Act, the Nigerian Constitution from 1979 and the Code of Conduct but the EFCC, in the report, did not explain how it wanted the amendment specified.”

Noting the Committee’s readiness to listen to the agency’s proposal, he said: “We have asked her to come with her team on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a robust interactive session. We invited the ICPC leadership guard and we had an interactive session that lasted for over three hours.”

The interactive session follows last week’s botched meeting between the Committee and the EFCC chairman.  Mrs. Waziri had expressed  reservation at the presence of pressmen at the meeting which she claimed was supposed to be a private meeting.

This will surely stop corruption at all levels in the country. 
As living above ones income is not encouraged in the developed countries and should not be encouraged in Nigeria also. 
Hope the new measures will be effective and not politicalize.

This is a welcome development, but is there enough room to accomodate the rouges on the prowl in Nigeria. Imagine someone earning 60,000 per month sponsoring 3 children in the university abroad?

It is amazing that this is coming up at this moment. There is no doubt many people in Nigeria are living above thier incomes, I am quick to add that, many average Nigerians are living below the poverty line, it a truism that needs no proof. Many hard workig Nigerins are strugling to make ends meet, many can not afford even 3 square meals.  
the only Nigerians living above their means are the the politicians at every level, public office holders and the Banks CEOs who are digging their hands into the public vault. 
So, the good news is that, those who are living above their means are not far fetched.

EFCC should stop chasing shadows and go after the real criminals. We all know who they are, but it seems Farida Waziri's chief mission is actually to protect those criminals. She has to realize that Nigerians are now too sophisticated for her cheap lies.

It is a welcome development. This is the only way that budgets overblown can be checked alongside protecting insiders whistle blower. Nigerians have been shortchanged for too long. 
 
Can you imagine where a budget is made with a staff's name but s/he cannot ask for the budget let alone the money? we should act fast otherwise this technocrats will milk this country dry .

Hurray!!! Now Mrs Waziri might find some cases against Obasanjo and some members of his team. It is unthinkable how a man that had N20000 in 1999 is now a multi-billionaire, building more schools, more farms, more hotels and buying private jets. All these from earning around N2m per year as President. 
 
Mrs Waziri should also extend her search light to Generals (rtd and serving) who earned peanuts as salaries but managed to set up airlines and shipping companies. 
 
I have my doubt though that the EFCC will only focus on those that steal little amounts from their masters while working at filling stations, bars, mama-put restaurants and the like. Afterall, are the sharia people not cutting off the hands of chicken thieves while sparing those of governors that embezzled millions of Naira?

It will be good to hear her out,because we are not happy with our economy now,personally am not against her, but let her start from the National Assembly then to the presidency even Obasanjo and co. If she wants to do a good work, start from the head, becos when the head is bad then the down should be rotten,I want Waziri to tell us how many probe the Nat'l Assembly had done and what is the result of it. Waziri, come out plain and tell us you are tired because I read the news of NIPS or what and how one person diverted over 650 million and above what is she doing to that?

I am happy for what you intend to do, that is good but will you go for those contract awarded in the air that are not executed, e. g railway contract which run into billions.See I know how our good president feels when he heard about that contract, still nothing has been done, and everybody who did that are free in our country; then tell me whom you want to go after. I suggest that EFCC should first conclude the cases they instituted against some Ex Governors before jumping into ordinary peopls` lives. 
It is very clear that the EFCC has lost every strenght to fight corruption in Nigeria. 
Yaradua should better disband the EFCC befoer they go the way of the POLICE, ROAD SAFETY AND CIVIL DEFENCE. 
EFCC has been compromised as it stands today.
