*Arms deal is a ruse to re-arrest me, *FG has issued warrant of arrest on me,*I am not a militant. I don’t deal in arms
Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari was at a gathering of political activists in Lagos last Tuesday to deliberate on how to bring out a new constitution for the country.
Uduma Kalu caught up with him where he speaks on the recent allegation that he is running arms along with leader of the
Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari
Movement for Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike. Asari also speaks on various issues as well as government’s plans to arrest him. EXCERPTS:
Niger Delta Ministry
For me, I don’t believe in it from the day they flew the kite. I told everybody that this is another deceit.
It is a Greek gift. It will not achieve anything. Let’s be very, very simplistic. If the Ministry of Education is not able to address the educational problem, the Ministry of Health is unable to address the health problems of everybody, not just Niger Delta, Ministry Works cannot fix the roads, how can the Niger Delta Ministry be different?
Will they import angels from heavens. They will ask God to give sabbatical to his angels to come and operate that ministry? For me, I think it will not achieve anything. You seem to be now into conferences. You have left, if you like the violent path?
Then you don’t know me. I have always been involved in conferences. The political conference in 1995, I was there. 1998, I was there. I was at the Ethnic Nationality Conference. I was at several conferences. I was at PRONACO. So, how was I violent?... It’s a period. Everything has its own time. When the time comes, we will know what to do. The thing is that Nigerians have introduced criminality into the struggle and we don’t want to be part of the criminal activity.
We want to stand aside. Let people not say we saw the Niger Delta People Volunteers or the Niger Delta People Salvation Front. That we saw them kidnapping. That we saw them doing this. We have come out from among them, and we are separate from them. The criminals are carrying out the activities and we don’t want to bs part of it.
JTF and coming back of militants
I am not a militant. So, I don’t know the militants that came together. I always stated that I am not a militant. My name is Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari. I am Aligbajia of Kalabari. I am one of the most important people from the place I come from. I have a good upbringing, religious up bringing. I have never been in gangsterism, in cultism nor anything.
I have challenged many people to come and show. People can come and run their mouths. My father was justice Melford Goodhead, a high court judge. My mother was Bekewari Dokubo Goodhead. She was a primary school teacher.
My grandfather was a church warden . I was president, Muslim Students Society of my University, president Moslem Students Society of Old Rivers state. So, I have always had religious background. I have never been a militant. And I am not.
So, who is a militant?
I don’t know. You said militants came together. What I am not, I don’t bother my head about something I am not. Definitely, I am not a militant. I know that I am not. So, I don’t know who is a militant. But I told you there are criminal gangs operating in my environment- raping people, extorting money from people, kidnapping people, and using all sorts of crime, together with another organised criminal gang sent by the Nigerian state known as the JTF and the police.
What do you think is the way out? We have had criminals, violence. The solution is to convoke a sovereign National Conference. That is the minimum requirement.
You think it will solve it?
It will. Whether they like it or not. (repeats it twice). Sovereign National Conference includes everybody, those you find in this part of the world called Nigeria.
I read in the papers where you were accused, along with Uwazuruike of MASSOB, of habouring weapons with one Mrs Duru
I don’t know Mrs Duru. It’s one of the kites they are... as I am talking to you, the Yar’Adua government has issued a warrant for my arrest, my re-arrest.
They’ve found out that if there is going to be a crisis, as there is bound to be, that the people who can oppose them are parts of MASSOB and Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Front, with our affiliate organisations....
So we are the visible face that will a give counter force. So we must be confined.
The woman, we don’t know her. Uwazuruike has said he doesn’t know the woman. I don’t know the woman. I have never heard her name. They said that I stay in her house when I come.
That she procures arms for us. But I don’t know the woman. And there was another woman at Ikeja arrested in Port Harcourt. With the same story. That she is supplying arms. So, that is it.
So why would they accuse you of arms deal?
For whatever, I don’t know. It is a ruse to arrest us and take us back to prison, until they execute and finish their project against the people.
What crisis did you say would come?
If the people are not allowed to sit down.... He who does not allow peaceful change will be forced to allow violent change.
I thought it was as found in the Niger Delta?
All the people here, are they from one region? They are from all regions and they are unanimous in what they are saying.
What will you do now that they have issued a warrant for your arrest?
Nothing. I will wait for them.
Have you told your lawyers?
I have told my lawyers.
But you don’t deal in arms, do you?
I don’t. I was granted bail....
