Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has admonished labour leaders in the country to cultivate the habit of having a sound friendly relationship with governments at all level rather than calling for strike anytime there were issues to be resolved between government and labour.
The governor, according to a statement by his information officer, Mr. Ayokunle Ewuoso, gave the advice when executives of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by its Chairman, Mr. Clement Adeniyi, paid him a thank-you-visit in his office, on the sponsorship of a study tour of 15 members of NLC to South Africa on labour relations. According to Daniel: "The old theory about management /labour relationships, which position management and labour as always ready to fight, believing that the objectives of management and labour is usually different should be jettisoned.'' He said the relationship between government and labour should always be cordial, adding that his administration would continue to encourage workers in the state. “I’m happy that in the last five and half years of our administration, we have had it clear in printed, in words and deeds that the objectives of the workers and the government should be coterminous and I think that we have proven this. I must thank you because you have provided collaboration since the five and half years of this administration. “We have not had any challenge with labour down tolling, whatever down tolling has occurred has largely been due to national instruction which has a good unionist you must comply,” he said. In his remarks, the NLC Chairman, Mr. Clement Adeniyi, stated that the South African study tour has enabled labour to learn and see the beauty of government/labour collaboration in the scheme of things. |
