Rivers State Government says it is saddened by the non-compliance of the local content policy of Total oil company in spite of the various warnings and appeals to companies operating in the state to observe the federal and state governments’ local content policy.
Government said it is equally not satisfied with the company’s lack of engagement of Rivers indigenes in the management cadre, stating that it would not matter “even if a Rivers man is appointed to be a personnel manager.” Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi disclosed yesterday, at the signing of a three billion dollars contract on the harnessing of gas currently being flared, stating that it was time an indigene of the state or “Egi host community of Total is introduced to the managerial level”. He said the observation had become necessary because companies and others doing business in the state should play by the rules because “many of our youths are dying every day because of the time bomb set by certain people in government who themselves have fled the state.” However, Amaechi said it was heart warming that Total oil had operated for over 30 years in the state and had carried the community along, so much that it had worked “successfully and peacefully amongst the people of its exploration”. Represented by his deputy Mr. Tele Ikuru, the governor said it was “a thing of joy that over 1000 youths would be employed for the three years that the contract would last”, stating that the company had demonstrated courage by staying put “even when other were running out of the state.” On his part MD CEO of Elf petroleum Mr. Guy Maurice said the signing of the contract was “giving official approval for the project by our senior partner, NNPC, while the major contract is being signed by SAIPON, PONTICELLI, SAIPRN and DESICON. “OML 58 Upgrade is designed to meet the government’s objective of boosting domestic and industrial gas supply and complying with government’s gas flare out policy, supplying gas to the NLNG in Bonny, enhancing the security and asset integrity of the operating environment”. |
