National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has decried the situation at the primary health level, describing it as “very pathetic” and therefore called on the three tiers of government to intervene immediately before the total collapse of the sector.
National president of the association, Comrade Lawal Hussaini Dustsinma, who made this known in Minna, Niger State, yesterday during the activities to mark the 5th biennia/4th quadrennial national delegates conference said, “In order to arrest the situation immediately, local government should be compelled through legislation to increase their budgetary provision on health to take care of health personnel especially midwives to help reduce the maternal/infant mortality rate in our communities.”
He also called on government to implement the rural posting allowance to serve as an incentive to health personnel in the rural communities.
According to HIM, “There is no serious commitment to patient safety which involves a wide range of actions in recruitment, training and retention of health care professionals, improvement, environmental safety and risk management including infection control, safe clinical practices, safe environment of care and accumulating an integral body of scientific knowledge focused in patient safety and the infrastructure to support its development.”
While calling on the Federal government to put in place policies that will ensure quality work environment, adequate infrastructures and safety consciousness, it also urged it to develop achievable measures to stem the brain drain of Nurses and other health professionals in Nigeria saying,” our people need quality nursing care and all hands must be on deck to ensure that the environment is made safe for Nurses to work.”
Comrade Dutsinma noted that despite the sharp increase in food prices in the past one year globally, Nigeria has no business being part of the crisis due to the vast arable land mass and enormous population the country is blessed with pointing out that if maximized, there should be abundant food not only for domestic consumption but even for export.
With the theme of this year’s conference as “Globally food crisis, poverty and the implication on Family Health,” the National President noted that research carried out by the Association has clearly shown that the increase in the consumption of canned food and other western diets have increased such diseases as diabetes mellitus, obesity, hypertension, peptic ulcer among others among most Nigerians and therefore charged Nurses to take a leading role in counseling families on the nutritional needs from available local contents.
He noted that there are varieties of food crops in Nigerian which contain the seven classes of food such as carbohydrates, protein, fat and oil, vitamins, minerals and water adding that to ensure that the nutritional needs of the family is realized, there is need to educate the family on how to start a home garden, elementary methods of food preservation, adequate cooking methods and proper eating habits.
