SAMUEL Peter’s reign as the World Boxing Council Heavyweight Champion ended disgrace-fully in Berlin when former World Champion, Vitali Klitschko (36-2, 35 KOs) joined his brother Wladimir as reigning world champion, regaining the WBC version of the title with a one-sided eighth round TKO over Sam Peter (30-2, 23 KOs) on Saturday night at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. Samuel Peter who had sweet-talked Nigerians into believing that he would retain the title turned out to be a real ‘Nightmare’, submitting himself for punishment until he retired after the eight round.

The much taller Klitschko kept Peter at bay with his long reach in round one, cracking Peter with some hard rights. As the bout progressed, Vitali continued to strafe Peter from long range and although Klitschko was keeping his mouth open and his hands dangerously low, Peter had little success reaching him.Klitschko had not boxed for four years but he outclassed the champion in front of a full house at the O2 World Arena in Berlin. Peter was trailing 80-72 on the scorecards after the eighth round and the Nigerian decided he could not go on — putting Dr. Steelhammer back on top of the world.
Klitschko swept the first four rounds as announced by the WBC’s open scoring. Vitali continued to batter Peter mercilessly as the bout progressed. Round eight was Klitschko’s most dominant of the bout as he staggered Peter with numerous hard blows.
A swollen, frustrated and to that point clueless Peter surprisingly quit in his corner after eight rounds. Scores were 80-72, 80-72, 79-73 for Klitschko when Peter packed it in. In all, an unexpectedly dominant performance by Klitschko, who had the perfect game plan to dismantle Peter. At 37 years of age and despite nearly four years since his last fight, Vitali looked as sharp as ever — like he never left.
A delighted Klitschko, 37, said: “I knew if I lost the fight I wouldn’t get a second chance. It was a one-way ticket and I used my chance.
“It was a big risk. Before I made the decision I spoke with my team and I heard different opinions.“My parents were worried but I am thankful for the people who believed in me and gave me support.
“I knew I was ready to take my world title back — the title that I didn’t lose and gave back to the WBC.” Peter’s manager Ivaylo Gotzev added: “It wasn’t his night and what’s important was to fight another day.
“We had nothing to prove and his corner had to stop the fight”, his Manager noted. With the successful demolition of Samuel Peter, the Klitschko brothers now hold all boxing titles with Wladimir Klitschko holding the IBF and WBO while his elder brother now holds the WBC title.
Before the fight, many boxing gaffers had tipped Peter to beat Vitali so as to fight Wladimir in a reunification bout. But all that permutation had gone to the wind with Peter’s dumb punches and reaction thereby allowing a man who had stayed out of boxing for almost four years feast on him like kids do on Christmas rice.
The implication is that there would be no unification bout between the Klitschko brothers as their mother made them to swear never to fight one another. For Peter, it was a nightmarish outing and his swollen face would be enough evidence that either he under-rated the Ukrainian Phd holder or that he never trained enough for the fight.
