Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission LASIEC has said that the result of today’s election would be declared to the public tomorrow, Sunday, October 12, saying that a total number of 293 chairmanship and 1,295 councillorship candidates are contesting in the Local Government elections in the state.
The Chairman of the commission, Justice Abdul- Fatai Adeyinka (rtd) who made the disclosure at a media briefing in his office yesterday, stated that about 30,000 policemen as well as other security agents have been arranged to provide adequate security in the 8, 467 polling units during and after the exercise. According to the chairman who added that 27, 000 Ad-hoc staff had been recruited and trained for the exercise, said election process will commence across the 377 wards between the hours of 8 am to 3. pm. Adeyinka emphasized that the voting procedure for the elections shall be for a voter to be issued with ballot openly, after accreditation and thump-nail marked with indelible ink and later, he will move to the polling cubicle to cast his or her vote by thumb-printing for the party/candidate of choice in secret. The voter will later drop his or her ballot paper in the ballot box openly before LASIEC officials and others present. His words: “We are fully prepared for today’s election. The ballot boxes, ballot papers and other sensitive election materials are ready while our non-sensitive materials are also ready. “We have complied with the law by displaying the voters register at the wards and the local councils. Thirty one political parties applied for LASIEC nomination forms while 25 of them returned the nomination forms. The commission has also published the list of validated candidates.” Adeyinka said only those that will be allowed to vote are eligible voters of over 18 years with voters registration card to be accredited openly at the polling station or unit.
He explained that eligible voter without his voter’s card can vote if his name is in the voters register but the presiding officer must satisfy himself that the voter is the person whose name is in the voter’s register, that the person has not come to impersonate another person. On the withdrawal by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adeyinka said LASIEC has listed the candidates of PDP as part of contestants in the election saying that PDP had the opportunity to withdraw earlier than now, “their withdrawal is not tenable in law.” |
