FOR the second time in a month, the Ekiti State House of Assembly has suspended all the 16 caretaker chairmen in the state, even as it screened five of the seven nominees of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), to conduct the local government polls in the state.
The house, in its resolution, freeze the accounts of the councils and ordered the caretaker chairmen to hand over to their respective secretaries who are the most senior officers of the councils. The SIEC members approved by the House are the chairman, Maj-Gen Simeon Oni; Mr. Babatunde Odutola, Mr. Olusegun Akinola, Mr. Awopeju Olutayo and Chief (Mrs) Tola Ajayi. Chief Solomon Osaloni was dropped because he had a standard six certificate rather than a secondary school certificate which is the minimum requirement by the 1999 Constitution. The sesond nominee, Komolafe, was dropped because he was allegedly not coherent and inconsistent during interview by the committee. The chairman of the House Committee on Information, Mr. Adebayo Morakiyo, who briefed the press after the resolution yesterday, said the committee members were screened based on the recommendation of the committee in charge. Morakinyo added that the fifth person, Mrs. Tola Jayi, who was not present, was indisposed, and that she would come later for her letter. He said the chairmen were suspended based on the agreement between the House and Governor Segun Oni, adding that the House has not committed contempt of the court, as the caretaker chairmen were only on suspension. According to him, within the next 65 days, after the constitution of the SIEC, the council elections would be conducted. In a reaction, the state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Mr. Yomi Ayorinde, said the governor had the right to accept or to reject the resolution of the House. Ayorinde, who is the caretaker chairman of Ido/Osi Local Government, said he was aware that there was a case pending in court over the dissolution of the local government committees. |
