Names of people like Oby Ezekwesili, Ali Baba, Aliko Dangote, Chukwuma Soludo, Dora Akunyili and so many others always ring a bell in the minds of Nigerians each time they are mentioned. One might wonder what they have done or possessed that any other person has not done or possessed.
In “Models and Mentors”, a 247 page book, Uju Onyechere, the best selling author of How to fire your Boss” and How to reject Rejection” highlights the character, growing up, failures and successes of fifty inspirational Nigerian achievers from the religious, banking, industrial, educational sector and so on; some of whom had walked through paths that no one dared to.
The author started by telling his readers what the book is meant to achieve. He believes that the book should spur one into action, help one change ones outlook and behaviour towards life while telling the story of a young American Orison Swett Marden to drive home his point.
In the beginning of each chapter, which usually centres around the life of a particular individual, Uju has three quotes. The first being that of the person he is writing about and others being that of popular historians or a proverb. This is followed by a passport size picture of the person in question. He then starts by telling a little story about a particular person or thing followed by a little biography of the Nigerian achiever.
This includes the person’s growing up years, schools attended, certificates obtained and awards received, failures, if any, and eventual success. After this comes the lesson to be learnt from the person’s life and character and, lastly, the reason for the book. The book also has an appendix and references.
The successes of these people are, first and foremost, according to the author, attributed to good relationship with God, constant reading, courageousness, focus, creativity, determination and the capacity to having good friends. He also believed that boldness and confidence in oneself, humility, generosity and ability to start small helped to push these people to where they are today.
The main reason for “Models and Mentors is to urge people into believing they too can make it real big. The idea is that one is expected to reflect on the lives of these people, pick out those things that will help them to succeed and imbibe them in their own life.
One might be wondering how stories about some other person’s life is meant to change one’s life. This book is meant to let one have a good idea of what branding and packaging is all about. It is believed that the way one brands and packages oneself and business go a long way in defining how one is seen and perceived by the outer world.
This kind of picture also goes a long way to encourage every one that cares to read the book to tap into existing resources to achieve one’s desires; though one is not meant to alway s invent something new or produce something different before one can succeed. But one can as well take ideas from what is already in existence or merge two things to carve a niche for one’s self.
The language of this book is simple to understand by an average reader. Jaw-breaking words that would require one consulting the dictionary every now and then are not used.
“Models and Mentors” has a lot to offer to society, especially the youths and all those who believe they have come to the end of the road as they can also turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones for greater achievements. It is, therefore, a must read for any one who wishes to live life to the fullest and leave his name and footprints in the sands of time.
